LIHUE, Hawaii — Kauai firefighters responded to several small brush fires Sunday night near Kalepa Ridge in Hanamaulu.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged, according to a release.
While returning from another call around 6:30 p.m., firefighters found a small brush fire on the hill behind the Kalepa Village apartments. The fire covered an area 100 feet by 50 feet, and several spot fires spread over a wide area along the Kalepa Ridge dirt bike trail.
By 10 p.m., firefighters extinguished and mopped up the scene.
On Monday around 6:15 a.m., crews returned because of a flare-up. Firefighters cleared the scene at 7 a.m.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire, but they believe it was intentionally set.
“Wildfires remain a top concern for communities statewide,” said Kaua‘i Fire Chief Michael Gibson. “There really is no excuse for this type of reckless behavior which is putting lives and property at serious risk. We urge the public for their help in identifying anyone involved in Sunday’s incident.”
