LAHAINA, Hawaii — Residential areas south of Lahaina’s Shaw Street will reopen on Sept. 16 now that all debris from all 1,390 residential properties has been completely removed, announced the Maui Emergency Management Agency on Friday.

The following zones will reopen allowing for residents to access the area – 13A, 13B, 13C, 13D, 14A, 14B, 14C, 14D, 14E, 15A, 15B, 15C, and 16A.

Once areas have been cleared, the county does not have legal justification to restrict public roads, so “Local Traffic Only” signs will be installed with the hope of deterring entry by the general public. Security checkpoints will be relocated to other areas of the Lahaina Impact Zone.

MEMA advises the public that Shaw Street will remain closed and placards will be required to enter checkpoints located on Shaw Street. Once debris is completely removed from 505 Front Street, Shaw Street will open to unrestricted access.

Maui County continues to assist with zone reopenings:

  • Increasing area patrols by the Maui Police Department
  • Lt. Audra Sellers of MPD’s Community Relations Section will discuss how to set up a neighborhood watch program in the community at the Sept. 18 Wednesday Disaster Recovery Community Update Meeting
  • County officials encourage neighbors to connect with one another and keep an eye out for each other
