Norovirus has been identified as the cause of illness for the 24 hikers on the Kalalau Trail on Kauai, according to lab results confirmed by the Hawaii State Department of Health.

Four patients were tested for norovirus and all four tested positive. Symptoms included nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Over the weekend, the Kauai Fire Department responded to multiple calls for rescue from hikers who fell ill on the Kalalau Trail in the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park. KFD transported one hiker, a 32-year-old female visitor, via a helicopter from Kalalau Beach to Waimea Athletic Field. She said she fell ill after drinking water in the area.

On Tuesday, the DLNR Division of State Parks closed a section of the Kalalau Trail for a seven-day period per the recommendation of the DOH.

DOH is working with DLNR to conduct sampling at the campgrounds and surrounding areas.
