WAIANAE, Hawaii — A half-mile stretch of Lualualei Beach Park in Waianae will close for two weeks starting Sept. 4 for maintenance work and an extensive cleanup effort, according to the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

The closed area will stretch between the bathroom building across from the Waianae Wastewater Treatment Plant (Sewers) and the parking lot near Ala Poko Street (Middles). The closure will last from Sept. 4 through Sept. 18 with fencing and signs marking the area.

The park and facilities will reopen Sept. 19 and permitted camping will resume on Sept. 20.

During the closure, city park crews will do landscaping work, clear brush, repair irrigation and work on the vehicular gates. City crews and community volunteers will work with park staff to conduct an extensive cleaning of the beach park.

The community is invited to participate in a volunteer cleanup organized by Councilmember Andria Tupola starting at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the nearby Waianae Mall. Wear covered shoes, gloves, hat and sun protection. Cleanup supplies will be provided.

Back in April, a similar effort took place at Ulehawa Beach Park, resulting in nearly three tons of trash and 10 cubic yards of recycled metal being removed from the site.
