KAHULUI, Hawaii — As Hurricane Hone passes southwest of the Hawaiian Islands, the Maui Emergency Management Agency asks the public to avoid roadways as much as possible because of a newly issued countywide wind warning, potential landslides, road closures and rainy conditions.

Portions of Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui and Molokai are under a High Wind Warning until 6 a.m. Monday. Northeast winds are 20 to 40 mph with localized gusts up to 70 mph. The summit of Haleakala is under a Wind Advisory until 6 a.m. Monday.

According to a county news release, the landslide on Hana Highway near mile marker 22 has been cleared, but other road closures are possible.

There is a High Surf Advisory for east-facing shores on Maui and Molokai to 6 p.m. Sunday.

“All motorists are asked to limit non-essential travel today to avoid any dangerous conditions and to allow highways crews to remove landslide material, fallen trees and debris,” said MEMA Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett in the release.

“We appreciate the public’s assistance as we continue to monitor Hurricane Hone and assess impacts. With Hurricane Gilma’s latest track also taking it westward toward the islands this week, it’s critical that any damage from the current storm is addressed before we face any new impacts that may arrive with Gilma. We will be keeping a close eye on developments and ask the public to continue taking steps to prepare and stay informed,” Lonokailua-Hewett said.

The public can report storm damage by calling MEMA at 808-270-7285. To view current alerts or sign up to receive MEMA emergency notifications, visit their website.
