HONOLULU — As Hurricane Hone moves across the state, Hawaiian Electric crews are out working to restore electrical service to customers.

The outages were caused by the storm and are not related to the Public Safety Power Shutoff program.

As of 11:30 a.m. there were about 18,150 customers without power:

  • Hawaii Island - approximately 14,000 customers mostly in the east and south sides of the island
  • Maui County - approximately 750 customers in parts of Upcountry Maui and one customer in West Maui
  • Oahu - approximately 3,400 customers in Punchbowl, Kahala and areas across the island

A 5 a.m. power outage throughout downtown Honolulu and Chinatown, caused by equipment failure at Iwilei substation, was restored shortly after 10 a.m. A vehicle hitting a high-voltage transformer in a parking garage at about 3:40 a.m. caused a separate downtown outage that affected a small number of customers and is currently being worked on.

HECO reminds the public to assume that any downed power line is energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet or more away from all power lines and warn others to do the same.

Call 911 for emergency assistance. Or call Hawaiian Electric’s Trouble Line:
