Maui County officials encourage residents to prepare for Tropical Storm Hone.

The National Weather Service’s forecast calls for potentially heavy rainfall, strong tradewinds, and large surf starting Saturday, Aug. 24. East Maui is expected to feel the brunt of the storm.

According to a county release, crews have been proactively inspecting and clearing culverts where flooding typically occurs, equipment has been set up at locations that may be impacted, and county employees on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai are preparing their respective districts, according to Public Works officials.

Maui County’s Emergency Operations Center is ready and will move to partial or full activation pending NWS reports.

The NWS forecast called for East Maui getting the brunt of the storm’s impact starting Saturday afternoon. Though NWS has not yet issued watches or warnings for Maui County, county officials are preparing for the storm.
