Statehood Day is on Friday. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the state's 1959 admission to the United States of America. It is always celebrated on the third Friday in August. 

City and County of Honolulu closures

The City and County of Honolulu offices will be closed on Friday, Aug. 16 in observance of Statehood Day.

The holiday schedule for Honolulu operations is as follows:

  • Emergency medical services, fire, lifeguard, medical examiner and police will be available.
  • TheBus will operate on a state holiday schedule.
  • Skyline will operate on a state holiday schedule from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Refuse will be collected and transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be open.
  • Parks and botanical gardens will be open.
  • Municipal golf courses will be open.
  • Honolulu Zoo will be open.

The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office, all satellite city halls and driver licensing centers will be closed and People’s Open Markets will not be held.

Traffic and parking regulations in effect:

  • On-street parking will be free except for meters on Kalakaua Avenue along Queen Kapiolani Park, metered parking lots and meters on specific Waikiki streets
  • Traffic lanes will not be coned for contraflow.
  • Parking will be restricted in Lanikai over the Admission Day weekend, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16 to Aug. 18. No parking will be allowed on all streets and shoulders of Mokulua and Aalapapa drives and parking will also be restricted on cross-streets connecting Mokulua and Aalapapa drives. Signs will be in place to warn drivers of the restrictions.

Kauai County closures

County of Kauai offices will also be closed on Friday to observe Statehood Day, including the following:

  • All neighborhood centers
  • Puhi Metals Recycling Center
  • Reynolds Recycling HI5 Redemption Center in Lihue
  • Kekaha Landfill
  • All refuse transfer stations
  • Waimea and Kapaa swimming pools

The Kauai Police Department Records services and firearms registration will have modified hours through Aug. 15 and will be closed on Aug. 16.

  • Records window will be open 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
  • Firearms registration services will be open 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the same days.

Residential refuse pick-ups will continue as usual and The Kauai Bus (808-246-8110) will operate on its regular schedule.

Maui County closures

Maui County Offices will close in obversance of Hawaii Statehood Day on Friday, August 16; regular business hours and services will resume on Monday, Aug. 19.

Offices that will close include: The Office of Recovery, West Maui at Lahaina Gateway and the Recovery Permit Center at the County of Maui Service Center in Kahului.

Other service changes or notes:

  • Hāna, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi landfills will be closed
  • The Central Maui Landfill and Maui EKO Compost will be open for shortened hours from 6 a.m. to noon Friday
  • County pools will be closed
  • County parks will remain open
  • The Maui Bus will be operating on its regular schedule
