HILO, Hawaii — Thousands of outrigger canoe paddlers from around the world are expected to gather in Hilo for the International Vaʻa Federation World Sprint Championships, held Aug. 13 through 24.
The International Vaʻa Federation, Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association and County of Hawaii partner to welcome more than 2,800 paddlers from 27 countries competing in the championships staged at Hilo Bayfront Beach Park.
“We’re excited to welcome thousands of paddlers and their families to our shores,” said Mayor Mitch Roth in a news release. “Our island is home to some of the world’s top paddlers, and we’re eager to see them shine on the global stage. In true Hawaii Island fashion, we look forward to welcoming our guests with open arms, while promoting responsible, safe, and respectful visits. Paddling is a cornerstone of our culture, and we’re confident that our community will make this event truly special.”
Event schedule:
- Aug. 13-15 - Course familiarization
- Aug. 15 - Opening Ceremony at 4 p.m.
- Aug. 16-17 - Elite World Championship and Para Racing
- Aug. 18-24 - Club World Championship (Aug. 24 if needed)
- Aug. 20 - Culture Night at Edith Kanakaʻole Multi-Purpose Stadium, 6 to 9 p.m.

Hawaii Island police advise motorists drive with caution and to expect increased foot and vehicle traffic in downtown Hilo, especially along Kamehameha Avenue near Hilo Bayfront Beach Park and Wailoa River State Recreation Area.
Parking will be available at Wailoa River State Recreation Area on the field between the Wailoa River and Kamehameha Avenue with access from Bishop Street. Overflow parking will be at the Afook-Chinen Auditorium on Manono Street.
Hawaii Island police will have assigned special duty officers stationed along Kamehameha Avenue to assist pedestrians throughout the event from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area if not participating or viewing the event to alleviate traffic congestion.

The last time Hawaii County hosted the IVF World Sprint Championships was in 2004.
