KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — Beginning July 29, the waiting list will open for applications for Kauhale I Ke Kula Uka, formerly known as the Kaloko Heights Affordable Housing Project, in Kailua-Kona.


What You Need To Know

  • Only applications delivered or postmarked by August 12 will be included in an initial lottery to determine the order in which residents will be processed for eligibility and final tenant selection

  • Applications not selected in the initial lottery or that come in after the deadline will be placed on a waitlist based on the time and date received

  • Kauhale I Ke Kula Uka will have 58 three-bedroom units and 41 two-bedroom units for families earning up to 60% of the area median income

  • Construction of the affordable housing unit is expected to finish in the fall with families moving in in December

Working through property manager Hawaii Affordable Properties. Inc., the nonprofit developer Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation will accept applications from families from July 29 through Aug. 12.

“We are thrilled to share this opportunity with our community,” said Mayor Mitch Roth in a news release. “Our goal remains to provide homes for as many local families as possible. With 99 new family units now available in the heart of Kailua-Kona, we are making significant progress towards that goal. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved in developing these incredible units and encourage everyone to share this information with friends and family who may be eligible.”

Kauhale I Ke Kula Uka will have 58 three-bedroom units and 41 two-bedroom units for families earning up to 60% of the area median income. There will also be an onsite manager’s unit.

Six two-story and three-story garden-style wood-frame buildings will house the units and have solar water heating and laundry facilities. A range, oven, refrigerator and garbage disposal will be included in each unit.

A community center will have the property management space, kitchen, private meeting rooms, congregate gathering space and mailboxes.

Construction of the affordable housing unit is expected to finish in the fall with families moving in in December.

Funding for the project come from tax-exempt bonds, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, Rental Housing Revolving Fund, HOME, Housing Trust Fund and the Project-Based Voucher Program.
