Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announced the closure of parts of Mauna Loa Road and Hilina Pali Road to motorists starting Tuesday because of an elevated fire risk in these areas.

Park officials closed Hilina Pali Road to vehicles from Maunaiki Trailhead to Hilina Pali Lookout, and closed Mauna Loa Road to vehicles from the gate past Kipukapuaulu to Mauna Loa Lookout.

It is not clear how long the closure will last.

Park officials said pedestrians and bicyclists may continue to use both roads, and backcountry permit holders will be given access to trailheads.

The park is also prohibiting open fires at Namakanipaio campground, Kipukapuaulu picnic area, and Kilauea Military Camp. Instead, propane and gas cooking stoves may be used.

Low rainfall, reduced humidity and gusty winds created an elevated fire risk throughout the park.

Park officials urge visitors to not park on dry grasses as the hot underside of a vehicle can ignite dry grass. In Hawaii, most wildfires are unintentionally caused by humans.
