LIHUE, Hawaii — The Kauai Police Department sent a release warning the public about a jewelry scam.
The KPD is investigating recent incidents in which people appearing to be foreign nationals have approached residents in public spaces, offering to sell them counterfeit jewelry.
According to KPD, these deceitful activities are similar to incidents that occurred in 2022.
During the previous scam, KPD apprehended four male suspects who were selling counterfeit jewelry.
The suspects told victims they sold rare or antique pieces at significantly reduced prices, targeting them in public places and residential areas. The suspects said they were visitors in financial distress, but the victims later discovered the jewelry was fake.
KPD said recent reports indicate similar jewelry scams are also taking place on neighbor islands, demonstrating that the criminal activity is spreading throughout the state.
"These scams exploit the kindness and aloha spirit of Kauai's people," Lieutenant Kennison Nagahisa of the Criminal Investigations Division said in a statement. "We urge everyone to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious behavior or individuals using this approach. Educating your loved ones about these scams is important, especially as kupuna are often targeted in such crimes."
KPD advised people to be vigilant, verify identities, report suspicious activities, question unusual situations, educate loved ones, and stay informed.
Report any suspicious activity to KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300, submit a tip at cskauai.org or use the Crime Stoppers Kauai P3 Tips Mobile App.
