LIHUE, Hawaii — The Kauai Humane Society is hosting a special adoption event, in partnership with BISSEL Pet Foundation, where adoption fees for dogs and cats will only be $25 and seniors will be free. 

BISSEL Pet Foundation sponsors the reduced adoption fees for the annual “Empty the Shelter” events at Kauai Humane Society and at almost 400 shelters across the U.S. 

Kauai Humane Society’s “Empty the Shelter” event will take place for the entire month of July. 

During the event, all puppies and kittens have a 2-for-1 adoption fee, and all dogs and cats residing in the shelter for more than 100 days have adoption fees waived.

“Shelters are struggling with a variety of challenges right now — some are evacuating pets because of wildfires, tornadoes, or even loss of air conditioning in extreme heat, and others are overcrowded and having to euthanize highly adoptable pets to make space, a tragic situation,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in a statement. 

Bissell emphasized that adopting dogs and cats saves their lives and also makes room at the shelter for another animal’s life to be saved. For those who can’t adopt, she encourages them to foster, which she said saves lives when shelters are full.

Kauai Humane Society has been part of “Empty the Shelter” adoption events since 2021. Last year, 52 pets were adopted during the event. 

“We have been at more than double capacity for months and the overcrowding is taking a toll on the animals in our care,” said Nicole Schafer Crane, Executive Director at Kauai Humane Society. “Adoptions have slowed this year, so we hope this event allows us the opportunity to find homes for our amazing animals.” 

Started in 2016, BISSEL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelter” event is the largest funded adoption event in the U.S.
