HANAPEPEPE, Hawaii — Kauai County’s Department of Public Works and Kiewit West Infrastructure announced construction work on Hanapepe Bridge will lead to its closure from July 22, 2024, to April 11, 2025.

The $3 million construction project includes replacing the pedestrian walkway, spalled concrete repairs to the bridge abutments, piers and deck, reinforcement of the bridge deck, and an overlay with a new asphalt surface, according to a news release.

The historic nature of the bridge will remain. Completed in 1911, the bridge is the oldest reinforced concrete deck girder bridge in Hawaii and also the longest of its type in the state, according to the Historic Hawaii Foundation.

Crews will work on the bridge weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but the bridge will be closed at all times. The Department of Public Works asks motorists to use alternative routes, follow detour signs, drive with caution, and allow extra time to get to destinations while the construction is ongoing.

Hanapepe Bridge on Hanapepe Road is not the same as the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge, which is a pedestrian-only suspension bridge.
