The Hawaii Police Department is investigating after a man swimming at Anaeho‘omalu Bay in Waikoloa had cuts consistent with a shark bite.

A 20-year-old man visiting from Romania was swimming on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in waters up to 20-feet deep when he suddenly felt pain on his right foot. He discovered lacerations on the top and bottom of his foot were bleeding profusely, according to a news release.

The victim, along with the other people swimming near him, did not see a shark. However, a medical professional on scene said the injuries were consistent with a shark bite.

Hawaii Fire Department medics transported the victim to the Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital. The injuries were not life threatening.

Hawaii police said they are not planning to close Anaeho‘omalu Bay.
