What You Need To Know

  • The target date to reopen Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30) from Keawe Street to Hokiokio Place is Aug. 1 before the new public school year begins

  • After the reopening, work in the coming months will include replacing storm drains, guardrail repairs and road repaving though traffic will continue in both directions with single-lane closures

The target date is Aug. 1.

According to HDOT, Honoapiilani Highway from Keawe to Hokiokio is currently being used to haul debris with limited access to just utility vehicles, contractors and recovery agencies performing work on roadways and accessing nearby properties.

Once reopened, the highway will primarily be used for through-traffic only with ongoing repairs and recovery work being conducted on side streets.

"The reopening of Honoapiilani Highway is a major step forward. We will continue with our partnerships to rebuild from the August 2023 tragedy and appreciate the continued patience from those commuting to and from West Maui,” Gov. Josh Green said in a news release.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said, "We appreciate the tremendous work and coordination underway to safely reopen Honoapiilani Highway. We acknowledge this closure has been a hardship on our community, and we are collectively working to open the road as expeditiously as possible."

After the reopening, work in the coming months will include replacing storm drains, guardrail repairs and road repaving. Traffic will continue in both directions though there may be single-lane closures on Honoapiilani Highway.

Maui County’s Office of Recovery has also announced repairs and installations on Lahainaluna Road between Honoapiilani Highway and Lahaina Bypass will begin in the next few weeks to prepare for the reopening of Lahainaluna Road also in August but with no specific date.

Repairs and upgrades on Lahainaluna Road include:

  • The county Department of Public Works Highways Division will repair pavement along the roadway that will cause alternating traffic on a single lane in the work zone.
  • The county’s Department of Water Supply will also install new hydrants at 371 Lahainaluna Rd., 433 Lahainaluna Rd., Kahula Place and Keaka Place, in addition to replacing 17 service laterals and installing additional waterline upsizing on both sides of Lahainaluna Road.
  • The county’s Department of Environmental Management Wastewater Reclamation Division will also repair the main sewer line in the area of 530 Lahainaluna Rd.
