The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services plans to restrict parking in Kailua and Lanikai over Memorial Day weekend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Over the past three years, DTS has banned street parking in Lanikai during the long holiday weekends. People often flock to the Lanikai neighborhood to enjoy the beach and the Lanikai Pillbox hike, causing traffic congestion for the residents of the wealthy neighborhood.

In Lanikai, parking is restricted along Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives, as well as on cross-streets connecting Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives. Parking along Makalii Place, which is the road closest to Kailua Beach Park, will also be restricted.

To inform the public, DTS will set up temporary “sawhorse” style signs on affected streets in Kailua and Lanikai.
