Maui County’s Kaunoa Senior Center is calling out for volunteers and donations of ti leaves so that every veteran at Maui Veterans Cemetery can be honored on Memorial Day.

They say 4,106 lei are needed this year.

The public can take ti leaf donations to Kaunoa Senior Center at 401 Alakapa Place in Spreckelsville.

People can also drop off donations of finished fresh flowers and ti leaf lei at a drive-through event at the senior center on May 24 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Kaunoa Senior Center invites adults 55 years and older to learn to make ti leaf lei by signing up for classes on Mondays throughout the month of May. Sessions will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on May 6, 13, and 20.

Following the senior classes on the three days, the public is invited to community lei-making sessions, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Ti Leaf Lounge. Supplies will be provided.

An additional day for ti leaf lei making has been added on May 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kaunoa Clubhouse in the Royal Lahaina Resort’s Alii Ballroom open to those 55 and older. Refreshments will be provided.

Call the Kaunoa Senior Center at 808-270-7308 and select option 3 to register for classes or information on lei donations.

Editor’s note: An additional lei-making date has been added on May 16. (May 7, 2024)
