The City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety Division is opening registration on May 1 for its free, one-week Junior Lifeguard Program this summer.

The program trains kids on life-saving techniques and general ocean safety awareness, according to a news release.

“The Junior Lifeguard Program is not only a fun opportunity for our youth to spend their summers but it provides our keiki critical knowledge on how to stay safe in the ocean,” said Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager in the news release. “We also have several former Junior Lifeguards now working for Ocean Safety.”

Children will be taught about using rescue boards and rescue tubes. They will learn how to respond to a person struggling or even drowning in the water. And they will be instructed on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR, and basic First Aid.

Parents and guardians can sign up their children, ages 11 to 17, starting on Wednesday, May 1 at 8 a.m. Registration closes Sunday, May 19, at 5 p.m.

Kids can only take part in one of the seven one-week programs.
