HONOLULU — Two Honolulu schools — Damien Memorial and Maryknoll — cancelled classes after a threatening note was found at Damien Memorial Tuesday morning.

In a message sent to parents, the school stated that it immediately reported the threat to the Honolulu Police Department. It also stated that all students were sheltering in place in locked classrooms. In a later message, Damien school administration assured families that "at no time was there an active shooter on campus."

Damien Memorial School's Director of Communications and Marketing Stephen Guzman stated in an email that because the investigation is ongoing, the school is referring all questions to HPD.

"The cases are classified as first-degree terroristic threatening," said HPD Sara Yoro in an emailed statement to Spectrum News. "No arrests have been made at this time. The investigations are ongoing."

Maryknoll School was also implicated in the threatening note, and the school also canceled classes on Tuesday. The school issued a statement, "Maryknoll School initiated an early school closure for both its lower and high school campuses as a precautionary measure due to a possible threat. All students are safe." The high school's softball playoff game against Kamehameha was also postponed.

Damien also informed students and families the school will be closed on Wednesday, so there will be no classes or athletic practices.

"This situation has been very disruptive and traumatic for everyone on campus. As a result, we have informed our students to remain home with their families tomorrow. School is expected to resume on Thursday," Guzman said.
