HONOLULU — An estimated 1,353 Hawaii Kai customers who had been without power since Sunday got their electricity restored by Hawaiian Electric crews earlier this morning.

Damage to one of the main transmission lines that brings power across the Koolau mountains into the Hawaii Kai/East Honolulu area caused the outage, according to a news release. About 4,000 feet of a 46-kilovolt line fell across another transmission line, taking both out of service.

Early Monday, inspectors surveyed the damage from a helicopter and crews are cutting through vegetation on the Waimanalo side to clear a path for trucks. Once done, crews will remove the damaged line from the second transmission line.

Hawaiian Electric said this is a temporary repair that will leave only one transmission line feeding the Hawaii Kai/East Honolulu area. The company will develop a long-term plan to repair the damaged line so the area will have backup power.
