HILO, Hawaii — On Sunday Hawaii Island police identified the motorcyclist as 26-year-old Jared Tellio-Flournoy of Hilo who died as a result of a traffic collision late Friday night.
Tellio-Flournoy was headed west on Kalanianaole Street when a pickup truck backing out of a driveway onto the street collided into him.
The driver of the pickup truck, Sterling Stroud, was not injured and has been charged with first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. Stroud’s bail has been set at $10,250 and he is being held at the Hilo Police Station pending an initial court appearance on April 1.
Hawaii Island police officers are investigating a two-vehicle traffic collision that occurred on the evening of March 29 on Kalanianaole Street between Kauhane Avenue and Pua Avenue in Hilo that left a 26-year-old motorcyclist dead.
Police responding to the collision at 11:39 p.m. Friday learned that a 2002 Toyota pickup was reversing out of a driveway onto Kalanianaole Street when it collided with a 2007 Honda motorcycle headed west, according to a police report.
A motorcycle helmet was found on the scene, but police don’t know if it was being worn at the time of the incident.
The motorcyclist from Hilo was unresponsive at the scene and transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m. on March 30. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The motorcyclist’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family.
The 26-year-old operator of the pickup truck, Sterling Stroud of Volcano, was not injured and was arrested for first degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He is being held in custody at Hilo Police Station pending further investigation.
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the incident and currently believe impairment and speed appear to be primary factors in the collision.

Police report this is the 12th traffic fatality of 2024 compared to five at the same time last year.
