Bretman Rock Sacayanan Laforga, a Filipino American beauty influencer from West Oahu, visited the Hawaii State Capitol on Wednesday, according to a news release.

The Legislature's Filipino Caucus and the Hawaii House of Representatives recognized Bretman Rock for his far-reaching influence, but especially for his impact on Hawaii residents and Filipino Americans.

"There are three rocks in Hawaii," said Bretman Rock while he was at the Capitol. "Barack, The Rock and Bretman Rock."

Bretman Rock rose to fame as a creator on YouTube and Vine, with one of his contouring videos going viral in 2016. Since then, he has starred in the reality tv show “MTV’s Following: Bretman Rock,” was the first openly gay man to appear on the cover of “Playboy,” and had a memoir titled “You’re That Bitch” published by Harpers. Bretman Rock is nonbinary and goes “by all the pronouns,” according to an interview he did on the Zach Sang Show.

When Bretman Rock arrived at the Hawaii State Capitol, Gov. Josh Green and Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke congratulated the 25-year-old social media personality and expressed appreciation for how he has uplifted people of all ages and walks of life. 

“Mahalo for all you do to inspire people from around the world and especially Hawaii's keiki to not only be proud of their cultural heritage but to be their true authentic self,” said Green. “Not only are you able to use social media as a tool for good, but you’re able to inspire people who don’t often get the spotlight. Your breaking of barriers and success are truly commendable and I’m so proud that you’re an ambassador of aloha and from Hawaii for the world.”

Luke applauded Bretman Rock for his commitment to living authentically. 

"Bretman is undoubtedly a treasure to Hawaii, and his authenticity inspires us all to be our truest selves,” said Luke.

Next, Bretman Rock joined the Hawaii State Legislature Filipino Caucus meeting. Legislators presented him with a gavel, and he presided over the meeting by gaveling in and out. He also shared his history as a Filipino immigrant and his experiences as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. 

At noon, the House of Representatives convened for Floor Session, recognizing Bretman Rock. Representatives Darius Kila, Rachele Lamosao, and Adrian Tam commended his many achievements. 

Kila, who facilitated Bretman Rock's visit to the Hawaii State Capitol, celebrated how his influence has inspired so many people to embrace their uniqueness. 

"Bretman, your journey is a testament to the power of dreams and the resilience of the human spirit. You have overcome obstacles and defied expectations, blazing a trail for others to follow,” said Kila.

Lamosao said Bretman Rock’s journey is a reminder that our differences make us beautiful. 

“His success is a beacon of hope for young Filipino Americans and aspiring content creators, showing them that with hard work, perseverance, and a little bit of sparkle, anything is possible,” said Lamosao. 

Adrian Tam, who is openly gay and serves as co-convenor of the Legislature’s Equality Caucus, told Bretman Rock his impact is immeasurable, as seen in the countless LGBTQ+ individuals who see themselves in him. 

"Your mannerisms have helped normalize acceptance of individuals who may be different, making me and my friends feel validated; you've inspired youth and adults across the country to live authentically,” said Tam.

After the Floor Presentation, House of Representatives members greeted Bretman Rock. 

"It is truly an honor to be honored today," proclaimed Bretman Rock.
