Puunene, Hawaii — With over 600 animals in its care and zero open kennels, the Maui Humane Society is reaching out to families and individuals to adopt or foster animals in their care.

To open up critical kennel space for incoming animals, MHS is offering $20 adoption fees for adult dogs and $0 adoption fees for adult cats this weekend, Feb. 17 to 18, according to a news release.

Nearly half of the 600 animals are cats from the Lahaina fires, many of whom are available for traditional adoption or MHS’ outdoor-adaptive housing program.

Adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped. The reduced adoption fee for dogs includes county and licensing fees (not applicable to cats).

Located in Puunene at Mehameha Loop, the MHS shelter is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Out of $25 million received in donations, MHS plans to use $500,000 toward sending animals on flights to the Mainland and neighbor islands. Interested people can ask about the Wings of Aloha Transfer program that was initially set up to fly homeless animals on Maui to the Mainland.
