HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu placed self-service kiosks to renew vehicle registrations at select grocery stores in 2019. That first year, 31,963 people used the machines. In 2023, that number jumped to 156,428 people – more than any prior year.
The bright yellow kiosks operate much like ATMs and allow motorists to bypass going to satellite city halls. The DMV Now kiosks accept renewals up to 10 months past the expiration date with a $16 late fee.
“The growing use of these self-service kiosks continues to complement our broader efforts to widely turn renewing a motor vehicle registration into a convenient part of a trip to the supermarket,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services, in a news release.
Last year’s increase in users at DMV Now kiosks is a 36% increase from the previous year.
Here are the number of people who used DMV Now kiosks by year:
- 2023 — 156,428
- 2022 — 114,815
- 2021 — 125,203
- 2020 — 126,871
- 2019 — 31,963
The self-service kiosks are located at seven Safeway locations: Salt Lake Shopping Center, Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center, Kapolei Shopping Center, Waimalu Shopping Plaza, Kapahulu Shopping Center, Hawaii Kai and South Beretania Street. They can also be found at the Foodland at the Waipio Shopping Center.
