LIHUE, Hawaii — Kauai County’s Agency on Elderly Affairs will host a series of workshops aimed at improving the health of kupuna 60 years and above starting Feb. 6.

According to a news release, the Better Choices, Better Health workshops are evidence-based self-management programs that were developed at Stanford University to help participants better manage their health.

The upcoming series will focus on a Diabetes Self-Management program. The interactive workshops will be held every Tuesday beginning Feb. 6 via either phone conference or Microsoft Teams. Phone conference sessions will be 3 to 4 p.m. and Microsoft Teams will be 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Participants should attend all sessions to gain the maximum benefit.

Interested kupuna can register by contacting Johnny Yago at 808-241-4898 or emailing jyago@kauai.gov. Preregistration is required and the workshop is limited to five participants.

Some of the topics include techniques to deal with diabetes symptoms; exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; appropriate use of medication; and how to work effectively with healthcare providers.

Participants will make action plans, interact and help each other solve problems in carrying out their self-management program.

The program is designed to provide support and help participants build confidence in managing their diabetes while maintaining active, fulfilling lives. The workshop is part of a statewide initiative, Hawaii Healthy Aging Partnership – Empowering Elders.
