LIHUE, Hawaii — The Kauai Police Department on Friday announced a new online application is available for firearm instructors.
Existing firearm instructors can now fill out the Application for Verification to Administer Firearms Course that was created in the interim to implement recent changes to the Hawaii Revised Statutes requiring the verification of firearm instructors.
“This simplifies the process and allows instructors to complete the form on a tablet or phone,” said Police Chief Todd Raybuck in a news release. “KPD is excited to offer this convenient way to assist firearms professionals in complying with the new law.”
Before finalizing the administrative rules and forms required to meet requirements for the new law, KPD will host a public hearing to get feedback from firearm instructors on the process and areas for improvement.
On Jan. 1, a new law went into effect in Hawaii requiring people who want to get a handgun permit to first complete a safety training course taught by a verified instructor.
