In 1983, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was declared a federal holiday, and it is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January in honor of King’s birthday, on Jan. 15, 1929.
The holiday honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for civil rights and social justice through nonviolence.
To mark the holiday, many county and state offices will be closed. Other county services will have adjusted schedules to observe the holiday.
Here is a roundup of what's open and closed across the state.
State of Hawaii
- All public libraries and support offices will be closed on Monday. Libraries that are normally closed on Mondays will be closed to observe the holiday on Tuesday.
City and County of Honolulu
- City and County of Honolulu offices will be closed Monday.
- TheBus will operate on a state holiday schedule on Monday. For schedule information, visit here.
- The Skyline will operate on a state holiday schedule on Monday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For rider information, visit here.
- Trash will be collected on Monday.
- Transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be open Monday.
- Parks and botanical gardens are open Monday.
- Municipal golf courses are open Monday.
- The Honolulu Zoo will be open Monday.
- The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed Monday.
- The People’s Open Markets will not be held Monday.
- All satellite city halls and driver licensing centers will be closed Monday.
- Parking will be restricted in Lanikai over the three-day holiday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- On-street parking will be free, except for the meters on Kalakaua Avenue along Queen Kapiolani Park, metered parking lots and meters on specific Waikiki streets. View the list of Waikiki streets here.
- Traffic will not be coned for contraflow.
Kauai County
- County of Kauai offices will be closed Monday.
- The Kekaha Landfill will be closed Monday.
- All neighborhood centers will be closed Monday.
- The Puhi Metals Recycling Center will be closed Monday.
- HI5 Redemption Centers will be closed Monday.
- All refuse transfer stations will be closed Monday.
- The Waimea and Kapaa swimming pool are normally closed on Mondays, so the staff will honor the holiday on Tuesday.
- Trash pickup schedules will not change for the holiday.
- The Kauai Bus will be operating on its regular schedule during the holiday.
Maui County
- County of Maui offices will be closed Monday.
- Central Maui Landfill and EKO Compost Greenwaste are open 6 a.m. to noon Monday. Olowalu Recycling is open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday.
- Hana, Lanai and Molokai landfills will be closed Monday.
Hawaii County
- County of Hawaii offices will be closed Monday.
