The Hawaii Department of Health's Food and Drug Branch issued an alert Wednesday regarding a voluntary recall started by Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition. The recall pertains to specific batches of Enfamil Nutramigen Hypoallergenic powder infant formula because of potential contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii, according to a news release.
This recall extends nationwide, including products distributed to retailers in Hawaii, although it excludes Nutramigen liquid formula and other Enfamil items.
According to Reckitt/Mead Johnson, the products underwent rigorous testing, showing negative results for Cronobacter sakazakii. However, samples distributed outside the United States showed possible contamination, prompting a precautionary recall of all potentially affected batches.
Cronobacter sakazakii, if present, poses severe health risks, including life-threatening infections such as sepsis and meningitis. Symptoms may manifest as poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, abnormal movements, and potential bowel damage. While no illness or adverse events have been reported nationwide, the DOH urges Hawaii residents to seek immediate medical attention if their child exhibits symptoms after consuming the recalled product.
The DOH advises consumers to check for the specified batch codes listed below and dispose of the products immediately. The affected batches were manufactured in June 2023 and distributed in June, July, and August 2023. For additional information, including product reimbursement, consumers may contact Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition at 1-866-534-9986 or email consumer.relations@rb.com.
