An hours-long islandwide manhunt ended with two Honolulu police officers shot and the suspect shot and killed, media reports said.

Honolulu Police Chief Arthur "Joe" Logan said in a news conference Monday night that an attempted murder suspect, Sydney Tafokitau, was killed, and two officers were at The Queen's Medical Center.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that a bullet grazed one officer's head, and a patrol officer was shot in the stomach.

Logan said Tafokitau, 44, was involved in a chase from Kapahulu to the North Shore for several hours on Monday afternoon.

The suspect was involved in an armed carjacking and fired multiple shots at pursuing officers.

Robert Cavaco, president of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers, said in a statement to the newspaper, "This afternoon, two Honolulu Police Department officers were shot while attempting to apprehend a dangerous attempted murder suspect. We are praying for the full and swift recovery of our injured brothers who risked their lives and sacrificed their safety today to protect the lives and safety of the public. Out of respect for the officers and their families, we will not be disclosing any additional information at this time."

Tuesday afternoon, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the two officers had undergone successful surgeries and were expected to recover.

"Today, our thoughts and prayers go out to the two heroic officers of the Honolulu Police Department who were severely injured in the line of duty while pursuing a dangerous and immediate threat," said Blangiardi in a news release. "Their dedication to keeping our community safe, even in the face of danger, is a testament to the selflessness and bravery that defines our law enforcement. I want to express my most heartfelt gratitude to these officers for their service and sacrifice."

Blangiardi said he and the entire City and County of Honolulu wish the officers a speedy recovery. He also thanked the first responders involved in their care.

"Our commitment to all our officers remains resolute, acknowledging and honoring their courageous response in the midst of grave danger. We recognize and value their steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors, a commitment that goes beyond duty, even at the risk of their own lives," said Blangiardi.

Before the chase, CrimeStoppers had asked for the public's help in locating Tafokitau, who was wanted for attempted murder in the first degree and robbery in the first degree.

According to HPD, on Dec. 16, 2023, Tafokitau got into a verbal argument with a group of men on Rose Street in Kalihi.

"He subsequently used a firearm to shoot at the group, striking one male, and a knife to cause bodily injury to a second male," the CrimeStoppers site reported.

On Dec. 21, 2023, multiple no-bail warrants were issued for his arrest.
