HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Transportation notifies motorists driving on Kamehameha Highway (Route 83) between Malaekahana Beach Park and Wahinepeʻe in the Kaneohe-bound direction, and between Wahinepeʻe and the vicinity of the Kahuku Police Station in the Haleiwa-bound direction that there will be a permanent speed reduction from 45 mph to 35 mph in both directions.
The installation of new speed limit signs will begin on Dec. 11. Once all signs have been installed, the new speed limit will be in effect.
This stretch of Kamehameha Highway is lined by residential homes and Malaekahana State Recreation Area on the ocean side and Gunstock Ranch and agricultural land on the mountain side, so the reduction in speed will provide “a safe and manageable speed limit for this section of Kamehameha Highway,” according to HDOT.
It will also allow for the removal of No Parking signs between mileposts 16.3 and 17.9 in the area of Malaekahana.
HDOT will also install speed tables along this stretch of highway as an added measure to slow down drivers. Used to calm traffic, a speed table is longer and flatter than a speed bump, enabling traffic to continue at a reasonable speed without too much jarring.
