HONOLULU — Include a bit of Hawaiian history on your holiday tree with a special ornament inspired by a dance card made for the 1889 ball honoring the Prince and Princess de Bourbon from Austria, hosted by King Kalākaua and Queen Kapiʻolani.
On the occasion, guests danced in the Throne Room until 2:30 a.m. the next morning, according to The Friends of Iolani Palace.
The dance card belonged to W.H. Cromwell, a government official under King Kalākaua. On the front is a crown with a red and gold decorative frame; on the back is King Kalākaua’s royal cypher. Inside is a list of music and dance partners for the evening.
Back in the day, guests attending formal balls received dance cards that noted the music that would be played during the evening and who they would dance with for each song.
The collector’s item is an exclusive Iolani Palace design by David Howell & Company made with solid brass, electro-plated with gold finish and is priced at $40. Members of The Friends of Iolani Palace receive a 20% discount. The public can purchase the 2023 ornament at the Palace Shop at the Hale Koa Barracks or online.
