WAIPAHU, Hawaii — A delay involving the construction materials for a new bathroom has pushed back the reopening of Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park until late spring of 2024, according to a news release.

The City and County of Honolulu is currently upgrading Hans L’Orange Park by creating a new parking lot, which will increase parking capacity from 47 stalls to 122 stalls. This required removing the old basketball court and converting an unpaved overflow parking area.

The park has also received new lights for the baseball field, a new irrigation system, a new bathroom, landscape improvements and upgrades to the electrical and drainage systems.

The upgrades cost about $4.2 million, with $294,000 for the design and $3.9 million for the construction. Close Construction Inc. started construction in January. Originally, upgrades were expected to be completed by July 2023.

The delay in completing the improvements means that the park and baseball field still can’t be used.

Chaminade’s baseball team, the Silverswords, was planning to play some of their 2024 home games at Hans L’Orange Park if the facility opened in time. Instead, they will play their games at a combination of Central Oahu Regional Park and Les Murakami Stadium on weekends when the Rainbow Warriors are on the road.
