Hawaii Island police are at the Keaau Middle School campus on Tuesday after school staff informed them that an anonymous threat had been made to the school via social media, according to a news release.

At 9:27 p.m. Monday, a school official called Puna police officers after a concerned parent had informed them of a threatening social media message from an unknown person.

The suspect has not been identified and the origin of the message has not been determined, but detectives with the Area I Juvenile Aid Section have initiated a first-degree terroristic threatening investigation into the situation. Police also have an increased presence on campus.

The Hawaii Police Department reminds the public that law enforcement takes threats toward any school very seriously.
