The state Department of Education announced Wednesday that all Maui public schools, except for Hana School, will be closed to students and staff through Friday because of the wildfires burning across the island and evacuations in some communities. The department’s Maui District Office and the Puunene School offices are also closed.
HIDOE is waiting for clearance to access the Lahaina-area campuses and assess damages to the public schools. According to the department's website, "unofficial aerial photos show the King Kamehameha III Elementary campus — on Front Street in Lahaina — sustained extensive fire and structural damage."
Based on last year’s enrollment information, there were approximately 3,000 students enrolled at the four Lahaina campuses. State School Superintendent Keith Hayashi has organized a response team to help the schools plan next steps.
Schools in Upcountry, South and Central Maui will be closed through Friday so that staff can make damage assessments and determine the campus' ability to reopen.
Hana High & Elementary School will remain open.
