The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Kauai’s leeward areas effective Monday morning through Tuesday night, according to a county news release.

A Fire Weather Watch means the NWS is forecasting critical fire weather conditions. With the combination of dry fuels, strong and gusty trade winds and low relative humidity, extreme “fire behavior” could occur, according to the National Weather Service. That means any fires that develop are likely to spread quickly and be difficult to control.

Outdoor burning is not recommended during this time.

The public is urged to monitor for any news and possible Red Flag Warnings.

Weather updates are available by calling the NWS automated weather line at 808-245-6001 or visiting the NWS website.

The public can sign up for the Kauai County emergency notification service, Wireless Emergency Notification System, by visiting the county website or calling the Kauai Emergency Management Agency at 808-241-1800.
