HONOLULU — The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a second hiker in distress on Sunday, this time at Manoa Falls Trail.
At 2:29 p.m., five units with 16 personnel responded to a 911 call regarding a sick hiker who was unable to get to the trailhead on his own. The first until arrived on scene at 2:39 p.m. to set up a command center. The second unit ascended the trail on foot to look for the hiker.
They found the man in his 30s at about 2:54 p.m. and completed a medical assessment, providing basic life support. The hiker was then flown via Air 1 to a nearby landing zone and was handed over to Emergency Medical Services.
Earlier in the day, HFD responded to another male hiker in his 30s at the Koko Head Crater Trail.
On July 28, a 58-year-old female also required assistance on the Diamond Head Crater Trail.
Authorities have not said what caused the hiker at Manoa Falls Trail to need medical attention. However, dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion and possibly progress to heat stroke, they said. HFD provides the following hiking tips to those venturing outside:
- Bring plenty of water, stay hydrated and prepare for the unexpected.
- Know your physical capabilities and limitations and select trails to enjoy safely.
- Stay on the trail to avoid getting lost or injured.
