A Kailua-Kona boy, 3, suffered critical head injuries after a two-vehicle collision on Fri., July 28, on Queen Kaahumanu Highway south of Kaiminani Drive near the 93.5-mile marker in North Kona, according to a news release.
Hawaii Island police responded to an 11 p.m. call. They determined that a Kamuela woman, 26, driving a green 2007 Nissan Altima traveling northbound, rear-ended a gray 2018 Nissan Altima operated by a Kailua-Kona man, 32. The 32-year-old man was pulling over to assist a friend who had parked in the median after experiencing vehicle issues.
The 32-year-old driver, his 26-year-old girlfriend, their 5-year-old daughter, and 3-year-old son, were all taken to the Kona Community Hospital for initial treatment. The 3-year-old was then transported to an Oahu hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The driver, his girlfriend and their daughter were later released according to the police report.
The 26-year-old Kamuela woman was later arrested for negligent injury, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, and driving with a license that had been revoked for being under the influence of an intoxicant.
She is in custody at the Kealakehe Police Station while the investigation is ongoing.
