LAHAINA, Hawaii — Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina is reopening after resolving sanitation violations, according to a Hawaii Department of Health news release.

DOH’s Maui Food Safety Branch issued a red “closed” placard to Maui Brewing Company on July 10, citing a cockroach and rat infestation. Inspectors also cited the restaurant for holes where pests can enter, a build-up of grease and food debris that attracts pests, clutter where pests can nest, and a lack of soap and paper towels at the kitchen handwash sink. The restaurant is owned and operated by Amakua Holdings Inc.

According to DOH, the restaurant was issued a green “pass” placard during a follow-up inspection on July 26. Inspectors said the restaurant had eradicated the pest infestation. The first follow-up inspection on July 19 found the restaurant had cleaned and removed grease and pest harborage but still had an active roach infestation.

DOH is requiring Maui Brewing Company to hire a professional pest company to conduct weekly pest control treatments and population monitoring for a month. Another inspection will take place at an unknown date in the future to ensure the restaurant continues with pest control.
