Rockfall mitigation work along Waipio Valley Rd. begins on May 22 and will continue for approximately six weeks, according to a news release by Hawaii Countyʻs Public Works Engineering Division.

The mitigation work poses potential hazards in the area, therefore crews will close the road daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. During these hours, traffic will not be able to access the road.

The initial phase of the project will focus on Waipio Valley Rd. from the entrance of Waipio Valley Lookout to approximately 750 feet down the slope.

County officials say the closure is necessary to ensure a safe work environment for construction crews.
