EWA BEACH, Hawaii — The Hawaiian Humane Society’s second campus in Hoʻopili at 91-1945 Fort Weaver Road in Ewa Beach will open to the public on May 20, according to a news release.

Known as the Kosasa Family Campus, the five-acre property is the culmination of more than a decade of planning. The campus will meet the needs of more than 10,000 animals each year.

“The Hawaiian Humane Society has always provided services island-wide, but this expansion — the single largest in Hawaiian Humane history — will drastically increase resource accessibility for central and west Oʻahu residents,” said Hawaiian Humane President and CEO Anna Neubauer in the news release. “Two of every three West Oʻahu households report owning a pet, which is the highest percentage on the island.”

The shelter was built to minimize stress and the risk of disease to its animals by including soft-close kennels, open-air circulation, individual drainage for kennels, and large spaces for animal enrichment and exercise.

On May 20, an opening ceremony will start at 10 a.m. with a traditional Hawaiian blessing. The public is invited to the event which will go until 1 p.m. and includes pet resources, a kids interactive area, food trucks and more.

The Kosasa Family Campus will have a phased launch. Adoptions will be offered Wednesdays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Pet Food Bank, which provides temporary pet food for pet owners experiencing food insecurity, will be open every Wednesday and Sunday. The campus’ resource center, which helps with lost and found and animal admissions, will open later this summer. Within the next few weeks, the campus’ spay and neuter center will open. A dog park will open later this year once its grass has grown in.
