HONOLULU — New University of Hawaii at Manoa housing at the site of the former Atherton YMCA will be ready to welcome students on Aug. 11, according to a news release.
The building at the corner of University Avenue and Metcalf Street is expected to be completed at the end of July. Construction began in January 2022. The historic 1930s YMCA building will be surrounded by two six-story residential wings that will provide housing for 374 students. There will also be a cafe on the ground floor.
This will be the first new student housing at the UH Manoa campus since 2008.
The new building is known as Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs, and it is open to students from any discipline who are interested in innovation and entrepreneurship. RISE will also have meeting, co-working and maker spaces, which will be run by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship, located in UH Manoa’s Shidler College of Business.
Students who choose to live at RISE are also eligible for scholarships.
