HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife recently announced the winners of the 2023-2024 Hawaii Wildlife Conservation and Game Bird Stamp Art Contest.
Alvin Galvez won the conservation stamp category with his entry of an endangered land snail (kāhuli) found only on Oahu. Land snails were selected for the conservation stamp contest in celebration of the Year of the Kāhuli, proclaimed by Gov. Josh Green for 2023. Galvez won the game bird stamp contest in 2018.
Lauren Trangmar won the game bird stamp category with her submission of the chestnut-bellied sandgrouse, which is native to Africa and Asia, and was brought to Hawaii in the 1960s.
Hawaii state hunting licenses require the conservation stamp and those hunting game birds require the game bird stamp. Funds from the sale of the two stamps go to the State Wildlife Revolving Fund that supports wildlife populations and habitats, as well as to manage hunting programs in Hawaii.
The new stamps for the upcoming hunting season will be available on July 1. Stamp collectors who would like an original stamp can call 808-587-0166 or visit the Division of Forestry and Wildlife office at 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 325 in Honolulu.
