HONOLULU — The archery range at the Koko Head Shooting Complex reopens Friday, the first range to welcome back users since the popular East Honolulu facility closed for repair and renovations six months ago.
The range will open at noon on Friday and resume regular hours of operation, sunrise to sunset, on Saturday. The facility is open Wednesdays through Sundays.
The site includes five refurbished targets.
The KHSC pistol and rifle ranges remain on schedule to reopen next month.
Work continues on berm/backstop renovations; masonry on the range walls, pathways and steps; eyebrow/overhang replacement and fortification; roofing repairs; painting and upgrading of the shooting gallery amenities; fencing along the backside of the mauka ranges; and landscaping and grounds maintenance.
The range was originally scheduled to close for renovation in Oct. 2022 but was shut down weeks earlier due to what was initially attributed to “staffing issues.”
The city later revealed that nine workers had tested positive for elevated levels of lead. While the test results indicated levels that are not considered dangerous, the staff members were relocated “out of an abundance of caution,” DPR noted.
Environmental air monitoring was conducted in the initial phases of the renovation, and no lead was detected in any of the samples.
The Department of Parks and Recreation has been working with Kramer One, an architecture firm that specializes in shooting ranges, on installing interior and perimeter signage and updating operational procedures.
