HONOLULU — A monthlong maintenance project will intermittently close the Kamananui Valley Road Trail and Kulana‘ahane Trail in Kamananui Valley, also known as Moanalua Valley, starting on Mon., Feb. 6.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife will begin the work to clear vegetation and make road improvements from sunrise to 2 p.m. on weekdays. Hikers trying to enter the valley will be turned away.

“We understand how important these trails are to the hiking community,” said Aaron Lowe, DLNR Oahu Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Specialist, in a news release. “However, we want the public to recognize that the road needs to be cleared and made safer for day-to-day recreation. The heavy equipment clearing operations are too hazardous within such a small road corridor for safe passage.”

The project is estimated for completion on March 6.
