The County of Kauai’s Department of Public Works Engineering Division invites the public to learn about and share ideas and provide feedback to improve the safety and accessibility of Kekaha, Akialoa and Alae roads at a two-day design workshop at Kekaha Elementary School cafeteria on Feb. 6 and 7.
The project includes rehabilitating and resurfacing the entire length of Kekaha Road and Akialoa Road; implementing pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Kekaha Road, Akialoa Road and Alae Road; and improving traffic flow at the intersection of Kekaha Road, with Alae Road and Kokee Road.
The DPW staff and a consultant will guide attendees on a Walk Audit along a portion of the project alignment, 4:30-7 p.m. on Feb. 6. The walk may be up to 1.5 miles with observations and suggestions shared along the way. Participants are asked to meet at the Kekaha Elementary School cafeteria for light refreshments prior to the walk.
A Visioning and Design Workshop will be held at the cafeteria, 5:30-8 p.m. on Feb. 7, during which DPW staff and a consultant will summarize the project and conduct a hands-on activity to allow participants to provide input on road improvements. Doors will open early to allow for sign-in, viewing of the project posters and light refreshments.
DPW encourages community members to attend one or both events. Updates and additional project information is available at the County of Kauai Project Management Section website. Scroll down to “Kekaha Road and Akialoa Road Improvements.”
DPW will hold a follow-up meeting in April where the public can see how their feedback is helping to shape preliminary design decisions.
