The County of Maui is looking for ideas to improve West Maui housing and transportation options from Lahaina to Kaanapali and is requesting public input.
“This project is about reimagining West Maui’s main corridor to include new affordable and workforce housing and safer multimodal transportation options,” said Pam Eaton, project manager for Maui County, in a news release.
“To do that, we need to hear from the West Maui community. We are inviting people to tell us what a transit-oriented community corridor means to them. We want to hear about challenges moving to and through the corridor, important destinations, and your big ideas for the future. There are fun and quick activities for everyone, including a scavenger hunt and the chance to win prizes from local businesses,” said Eaton.
The public can share ideas and feedback in three different ways via the West Maui Community Corridor Transit-Oriented Development Action Plan website. Individuals can fill out a community survey, do an online mapping exercise or opt for an interactive scavenger hunt. Participants will be entered to win a gift card from a local business.
Maui County launched the project in July to transform West Maui into a transit-oriented community that’s connected, accessible, sustainable and livable.
Printed materials with more information will be available at West Maui businesses, schools and community spaces. The project team will also be at different local events to gather input directly from residents. Set to unfold in three phases, the project will continue through Nov. 2023.
