LIHUE, Hawaii — Kauai Police officials report a 52-year-old male, whose identity has not been released, is in critical condition after being involved in multiple traffic incidents late Friday evening.
According to a preliminary investigation, just after 11:15 p.m., the Kauai Police Department dispatch received a report of a white Toyota SUV headed westbound on Kaumualii Hwy. It reportedly struck a vehicle near the Kauai Humane Society and fled the scene. The driver who was hit reported no injuries.
Shortly after the first incident, the white Toyota SUV rear-ended a silver Toyota pickup west of the Halfway Bridge and continued westward. The driver who was rear-ended didn’t report any injuries.
A little later, the white Toyota SUV struck a silver Nissan sedan operated by a 34-year-old driver with a 3-year-old passenger. The two were treated for non-life threatening injuries and later released from Wilcox Medical Center.
The white Toyota SUV later rolled onto its side on the eastbound guardrail. The 52-year-old was removed from the vehicle and transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition.
The incident closed Kaumualii Hwy. near the Halfway Bridge for approximately three hours.
The Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the cause of the crash, but preliminary reports indicate alcohol and speed may have been factors.
