EWA BEACH, Hawaii — As part of its ongoing efforts to improve efficiency at its six refuse drop-off facilities, the Honolulu Department of Environmental Services installed a live-streaming camera at the Ewa Convenience Center so the public can monitor and avoid long lines.
This is the third camera to be installed at a city refuse facility. In June, similar cameras were installed at the Waipahu and Waianae convenience centers.
The department plans to install cameras at the Laie, Wahiawa and Waimanalo facilities soon.
The public can access any of the 24/7 streaming links at ENV’s Waste Drop-Off Locations page.
The installations follow a set of recommendations contained in the Honolulu City Council’s Resolution 20-292, which was prompted by public complaints of limited hours, long lines and congestion at public dumps.
The Council also suggested developing an appointment-based system for refuse drop-off; providing real-time information on waiting times and bin availability; improving drop-off signage; expanding the range of accepted waste materials; developing more efficient procedures to change out collection bins; incorporating turnarounds and bypass lanes to improve traffic flow; and expanding householder drop-off hours at the Keehi Transfer Station.
