KOKEE, Hawaii — The body of a 50-year-old man who went missing while hiking in Kokee State Park on Sunday was recovered on Thursday afternoon, a day after an extensive air and ground search was called off.

Moses “Lono” Gardner of Lawai was last seen on the trails off of Milolii Ridge Road. First responders launched a search on Sunday evening but could not locate the missing man, prompting a suspension of the effort on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday afternoon, personnel from the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry conducting regular field operations found Gardner’s body in the Kula Natural Reserve area of the park.

Kauai fire rescue personnel recovered the body and transported it to Wilcox Medical Center pending an autopsy.

Foul play is not suspected, and an investigation is ongoing.
